Amaechi calls for arrests after armed attackers set ADC secretariat ablaze in his hometown

Former Minister of Transportation and a prominent member of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), Chibuike Amaechi, has called on security agencies to track down and prosecute those responsible for burning the party’s secretariat in Ubima, Ikwerre Local Government Area of Rivers State.
Amaechi made the call on Friday shortly after completing his official registration with the ADC in his hometown of Ubima.
The former Rivers State governor also commended security agencies for their prompt response, noting that their swift action helped restore peace in the community after the incident.
“I appreciate the Commissioner of Police and the Director of DSS. They demonstrated great professionalism immediately I reached out to them.
“We are grateful for their support, especially those present here today. However, they must understand that incidents like this should not be allowed to continue.
“The best way to show this will not happen again is by ensuring those responsible for this crime are prosecuted. Having served as a governor, I understand the consequences of failing to protect the lives of citizens.
“If people feel unsafe, they may begin to defend themselves because they do not want to lose their lives,” he said.
Amaechi also urged party supporters to remain calm and peaceful, describing the attack as a deliberate attempt to derail the party’s political mission.
He expressed confidence that the ADC would win the 2027 presidential election and take over leadership at Aso Rock.
“Everyone should remain calm and maintain peace. We are focused on our journey to Aso Rock. What they are doing is merely a distraction.
“These actions will not put food on your table. Many Nigerians are struggling with hunger. If you are not hungry, tell them you are not. People are dying daily because of hardship.
“Meanwhile, a few individuals continue to divert public funds and expect everyone to stay silent. That silence can no longer continue.
“ADC members in Rivers State must register in large numbers. We need to mobilize strongly and show our strength. On election day, they will see whether we will vote or not.”
Meanwhile, the Chairman of the Ubima Council of Chiefs, Geotext Kpako, also condemned the burning of the ADC secretariat in the community.
Kpako described the incident as unacceptable and urged authorities to identify and bring those responsible to justice, stressing that accountability would help prevent similar attacks in the future.
“It was a very barbaric act. I witnessed it myself because I was present here.
“I do not know who sent them, but individuals from Ubima carried out the attack and burnt the building. We strongly condemn it.
“The council of chiefs rejects such behavior. Those responsible must be identified and held accountable for this act,” the monarch said.
Earlier on Friday, armed thugs reportedly attempted to stop Amaechi from entering his hometown of Ubima.
Security personnel attached to his convoy were able to repel the attackers despite sporadic gunshots.
The development came just hours after the ADC secretariat in Ubima had been attacked and set ablaze by armed men.
This marks the second reported assault on ADC members in Rivers State within a few months.
In February 2026, party members were allegedly attacked in Igwuruta, within the same local government area, during a political sensitization programme.
As of the time of this report, the Rivers State Police Command has not released an official statement regarding the incident.
