Release El-Rufai Immediately, Unconditionally – Family Tells ICPC

A member of the House of Representatives representing Kaduna North, Mohammed Bello El-Rufai, on Friday demanded the immediate and unconditional release of his father, former Kaduna State Governor, Nasir El-Rufai.
Bello stated that the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) has continued to keep the former governor in custody even after the expiration of the approved detention period.
The lawmaker disclosed this in a statement he personally signed while updating the public on the circumstances surrounding his father’s continued detention.
According to the statement, “In the name of Allah, the Most Beneficent, the Most Merciful, I chose to stay away from social media so I could devote my time to Ramadan, my family, and my responsibilities to the people of Kaduna North.
“However, I have now decided to speak in order to inform those concerned about the current situation surrounding Mallam’s unlawful detention.
“The last time I saw him, he was eagerly waiting for his matter to begin before a competent and fair court. As of March 6, 2026, the family of Nasir El-Rufai considers it necessary to address the public regarding the continued and unjust detention of our husband and father by the ICPC.
“Today, March 6, 2026, Nasir El-Rufai remains in ICPC custody despite the absence of any valid legal justification. There is no legitimate court document authorizing his continued detention.
“For clarity, Mallam El-Rufai was arrested on February 18, 2026. Following the arrest, the ICPC secured a remand order from a magistrate court on February 19. However, the order was flawed from the outset and legally permitted only a 14-day detention period.
“That 14-day period has now expired. The ICPC has neither filed charges against him in a competent court nor obtained a fresh or extended court order to justify keeping him in custody.
“Despite the expiration of the legal basis for his detention, the ICPC continues to hold him. This situation has moved beyond due process and now represents a clear violation of the law.
“The commission has failed in its responsibility to either bring him before a court with proper jurisdiction or release him. The appropriate and lawful action is simple: he should be released immediately.
“The refusal to do so strengthens our long-standing concern that the ICPC is being used as an instrument of political persecution rather than operating as an independent and impartial institution for justice. We therefore demand the immediate and unconditional release of Nasir El-Rufai.”
