Truck accident claims toddler, two others on Lagos–Abeokuta Expressway

Three individuals, including a toddler, lost their lives on Friday in a tragic accident at the Toll-Gate area along the Lagos–Abeokuta Expressway after an articulated truck reportedly lost control and ploughed into commuters waiting at a bus stop.
The spokesperson for the Ogun State Traffic Compliance and Enforcement Agency (TRACE), Babatunde Akinbiyi, confirmed the incident, noting that it occurred at about 2:00 pm.
He disclosed that six other persons suffered varying degrees of injuries in the crash, which involved a total of 15 people.
According to eyewitness accounts, the white Howo Sino truck with registration number T4995LA allegedly experienced brake failure, leading to a collision with several vehicles and pedestrians gathered at the bus stop.
Vehicles affected in the incident included two yellow commercial buses with registration numbers SMK 199YK and AGL 394YA, an LT commercial bus marked FKJ 360YH, as well as two Suzuki yellow buses with registration numbers 98YL and KSF 23YA.
“The truck reportedly could not stop and rammed into commuters who were trying to board vehicles at the bus stop, damaging several buses along the way,” Akinbiyi explained.
Providing further details, the TRACE spokesperson said three people died as a result of the crash, while six others were injured.
“A total of fifteen persons were involved in the accident. Six commuters sustained injuries, while three victims, two adults and a toddler, unfortunately died at the scene,” he stated.
Akinbiyi also sympathised with the families of the deceased and called on drivers of articulated trucks to ensure their vehicles are regularly maintained to prevent similar incidents.
“Operators of heavy-duty trucks should always ensure their vehicles are in good working condition before setting out on trips. In addition, traders displaying goods on walkways or along road shoulders are advised to remove them to reduce risks for pedestrians and commuters,” he added.
