ADC blasts Tinubu over controversial ambassadorial postings

The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has criticized the ambassadorial postings recently announced by President Bola Tinubu, describing the move as a diplomatic mistake.

In a statement released on Saturday, the party’s National Publicity Secretary Bolaji Abdullahi said the government erred by announcing the postings before obtaining the approval of host countries.

According to the ADC, the approval known as agrément must be secured from receiving countries before any ambassadorial appointment is publicly announced.

The party said the action contradicts established diplomatic procedures under the Vienna Convention on Diplomatic Relations.

Abdullahi warned that announcing the postings before obtaining consent could expose Nigeria to avoidable diplomatic embarrassment.

He explained that Article 4 of the Vienna Convention requires a sending state to first obtain the approval of the receiving country before appointing a head of mission.

The ADC also raised concerns about the number of ambassadors announced by the government.

The party noted that Nigeria maintains about 109 diplomatic missions worldwide but only 65 ambassadors were announced.

According to Abdullahi, this leaves about 44 missions without appointed envoys.

He questioned how the remaining missions would operate if the positions remain vacant.

The opposition party also asked why the government waited more than three months after the Senate confirmed the nominees before seeking approval from host countries.

Abdullahi further pointed out that there was no clear statement regarding Nigeria’s diplomatic mission to the United States.

The ADC warned that such delays and procedural errors could weaken Nigeria’s diplomatic presence globally.
