European Leaders Praise Zelensky for Offering Drone Interception Support Amid Iran Tensions

Leaders of the United Kingdom, France, Germany, and Italy have praised Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky for his country’s expertise in intercepting drones during discussions on rising tensions involving Iran.

The recognition came during a telephone conversation on Friday in which the leaders commended Zelensky for offering assistance to partners in the Middle East.

The European leaders also stressed the importance of maintaining strong and continuous support for Ukraine.

UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer briefed the group on defensive steps taken by Britain to protect allies and strengthen security in the region.

Starmer, French President Emmanuel Macron, German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, and Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni jointly condemned what they described as Iran’s “egregious attacks.”

The leaders agreed that intensive diplomacy and close military coordination would be essential in the coming days.

They also highlighted the need for coordinated action regarding developments in the Strait of Hormuz.

Concern was also expressed over the situation in Lebanon where Israel has continued to strike suspected targets.

Earlier in a post on X, Zelensky revealed that Ukraine was deploying military specialists to the Middle East to help counter Iranian drones and missile threats.

The move followed consultations between Kyiv and several partners including European nations, the United States, and Gulf countries.

Among the consulted Gulf states were Bahrain, Jordan, Kuwait, Qatar, and the United Arab Emirates.

Zelensky noted that Iran’s delta-wing attack drones are the same Shahed models that have repeatedly targeted Ukrainian cities and infrastructure during the ongoing war.

He added that more than 800 missiles and about 1,400 attack drones launched by Iran in recent days now pose a major threat to global security and free navigation.

Zelensky warned that the attacks could also destabilize international energy markets including oil, petroleum products, and gas.

Meanwhile, the United Kingdom has deployed additional military assets including the HMS Dragon warship and Royal Navy Wildcat helicopters to the region.

France has also ordered the deployment of its Charles de Gaulle aircraft carrier and strike group to the Mediterranean due to the uncertain security situation.
