IBEDC reveals cause of worsening power outages

The Ibadan Electricity Distribution Company (IBEDC) has attributed the ongoing electricity shortages experienced by customers to reduced power generation and unstable supply from the national grid.

The company explained that the situation has significantly affected the amount of electricity available for distribution to consumers.

Residents across several communities within the IBEDC franchise areas have recently been experiencing worsening power outages.

The situation has triggered protests in some communities affected by the persistent electricity shortages.

Youths in Osogbo staged a protest at the regional office of the distribution company on Wednesday.

In a statement released on Saturday in Ibadan, IBEDC apologized to customers for the inconvenience caused by the power supply challenges.

The company stated that gas supply shortages to electricity generation companies have drastically reduced power generation capacity across Nigeria.

According to IBEDC, the development has forced electricity distribution companies to implement increased load shedding across their networks.

The firm also revealed that electricity demand within its franchise areas has risen significantly in recent months.

It noted that the increase in demand followed the introduction of additional Band A feeders in line with regulatory guidelines.

IBEDC added that despite the rising demand, the electricity allocated to the company from the national grid has remained unstable and sometimes dropped.

The company said this situation has widened the gap between electricity supply and consumer demand across its coverage areas.

IBEDC acknowledged that the electricity shortages have disrupted homes, businesses and economic activities.

The firm also confirmed that protests have already taken place in some communities while others are planning demonstrations over the prolonged outages.

The company, however, appealed to residents and community leaders to adopt dialogue instead of confrontation.

IBEDC stated that it is engaging stakeholders while working with players in the electricity sector to stabilise the national grid and improve supply.
