The National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) has confirmed the death of a corps member in Abeokuta, Ogun State, with a staff member now in custody over suspected involvement.
The announcement was made in a statement on Tuesday by the NYSC’s Director of Information and Public Relations, Caroline Embu.
According to the NYSC, security agencies are investigating the incident, and the staff member linked to the case has been arrested.
“The Scheme is aware of the news circulating in the media concerning the suspected involvement of a staff member. We wish to confirm that the matter is currently under investigation by relevant security agencies, and the individual concerned has been taken into custody,” the statement read.
The NYSC expressed condolences to the deceased’s family, calling the incident tragic and assured the public that it would cooperate with authorities to ensure justice is served.
“We assure the public that we are cooperating fully with law enforcement authorities to ensure that the truth is established and that justice is served,” the scheme added.
The NYSC also reiterated its strict code of conduct for both staff and corps members and emphasized that misconduct or abuse of office would not be tolerated.
The incident, which occurred in Abeokuta, has prompted reactions on social media, with some Nigerians expressing concerns about the safety of corps members and the conduct of officials at the local government level.
Some users called for increased security for corps members, while others criticized the NYSC for not addressing similar cases, including the kidnapping and abuse of a corps member by bandits.
The NYSC urged the public to refrain from speculation as investigations continue, stressing that the safety, welfare, and dignity of corps members remain a top priority.
