Nigeria’s Power Sector Crisis: Pressure Grows on Tinubu to Remove Adelabu

The ongoing power crisis in Nigeria has intensified calls for President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to remove Adebayo Adelabu as Minister of Power.

Blackouts across the country have worsened over the past four months, with power generation fluctuating between 2,000 and 4,000 megawatts—well below the needs of a population of over 250 million.

Electricity distribution companies have pointed to reduced generation, while generation companies blame gas supply constraints and mounting debts.

The crisis has left Nigerians grappling with unreliable power. Despite public outcry, Adelabu has apologized for the situation.

Tinubu, in response, proposed the creation of a Grid Asset Management Company (GAMCO), which he claims could inject 150,000 MW into the system.

However, many Nigerians feel that apologies and policies are insufficient, calling for immediate improvements.

Eze Onyekpere, the lead director of the Centre for Social Justice, demanded Adelabu’s resignation, criticizing his lack of direction and failure to meet expectations in the power sector.

While some, like Professor Wumi Iledare, attribute the crisis to broader governance failures, not just ministerial incompetence, the public is looking for meaningful reforms and leadership to resolve the sector’s problems.
