5 Barriers To Receiving The King’s Spirit — Pastor Joseph Ebenezer

Pastor Joseph Ebenezer has outlined five key barriers that hinder believers from receiving the indispensable King’s Spirit.

He spoke during the afternoon session of Day Two (yesterday) at the ongoing annual National Youth Retreat organised by the CAC Revival Centre National Youth Ministry.

The retreat, which runs from April 1 to April 3, is holding at the Christ International Camp ground in Oru Ijebu Ode, Ogun State, and has drawn young people from different parts of the country and beyond.

While teaching on the theme of the King’s Spirit, the minister broke down what he described as the major obstacles standing between many believers and a deeper spiritual experience.

He identified unbelief and doubt as the first barrier, explaining that the Spirit of God does not settle in an environment where faith is absent.

He referred to biblical accounts where Jesus did not perform many mighty works because of the unbelief of the people around Him.

He stressed that anyone who desires the flow of the King’s Spirit must deal decisively with every form of doubt and learn to trust God fully.

The second barrier he mentioned is sin and disobedience, noting that a life that accommodates sinful habits cannot sustain the presence of the Spirit.

He backed this with scripture which teaches that God’s power to save is not limited, but sin creates a separation between man and God.

He urged participants to abandon sinful ways and embrace righteous living as a necessary step toward receiving the Spirit.

Distractions and busyness came third on his list as he warned that many young people are losing spiritual focus because of life pressures and personal ambitions.

He observed that the pursuit of success and anxiety about the future have pushed God to the background in many lives.

According to him, no one can fully receive the Spirit of the One they have placed second in their priorities.

He called on the youths to address this imbalance and restore God to the centre of their lives.

Religious tradition was identified as the fourth barrier, with the pastor noting that rigid mindsets have made many resistant to fresh moves of God.

He compared this to the attitude of the Pharisees who opposed Jesus despite clear evidence of His works.

He said believers must be open to God’s direction if they truly desire to carry the King’s Spirit.

Emotional wounds were listed as the fifth barrier, which he described as a deep issue that blocks the work of the Spirit within a person.

He explained that unforgivenees creates bitterness, and a heart enveloped with bitterness cannot host the Spirit of God.

He reminded the audience that forgiveness may be painful, but it is necessary for spiritual freedom and growth.

He pointed to God’s sacrifice of His Son as the ultimate example of forgiveness and reconciliation.

He also noted that Jesus linked forgiveness to answered prayers, making it clear that letting go of grudges is not optional for believers.

After addressing the barriers, Pastor Ebenezer provided 5 practical steps to help believers overcome them.

He said the first step is to recognise one’s spiritual thirst and honestly seek God’s help, drawing from the longing expressed in Psalms 42.

The second step is to come to Jesus in faith and receive salvation, which opens the door to the work of the Spirit as seen in Acts 2.

He added that believers must engage daily with scripture and prayer while cultivating a lifestyle of focused worship.

He also established the need to live in obedience, forgive freely, and serve others with boldness so that the work of the Spirit can flow unhindered.

The final step he gave was to maintain a heart of gratitude while expecting visible results from God, in line with the instruction in First Thessalonians 5.

He concluded by likening the work of the Spirit to a flowing river, explaining that its strength is seen when there are no blockages.

He noted that the Spirit of God remains powerful, but human habits and attitudes often limit its expression in the life of a believer.
