Iran Conflict: Germany, European Allies Reject Trump’s War Request

German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, along with other European leaders, has sought more information regarding US President Donald Trump’s strategy for the war in Iran.

The inquiry comes as European nations consider Trump’s request to deploy warships to secure the Persian Gulf.

German Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul stressed the need for the United States and Israel to clarify their military objectives in the region.

“We require greater clarity on this matter,” Wadephul told reporters.

A spokesperson for Chancellor Merz, Stefan Kornelius, stated, “This is not NATO’s war. NATO is an alliance established to protect the alliance area.”

Kornelius further emphasized that the US did not consult Germany before the conflict, making it a matter outside NATO’s scope or the German government’s purview.

Estonian Foreign Minister Margus Tsahkna also expressed concerns, seeking clarity on Trump’s strategic objectives and the war’s long-term plan.

Poland’s Foreign Minister Radek Sikorski urged the Trump administration to follow the correct NATO protocols.

“If a request is made through NATO, we will certainly consider it very carefully,” Sikorski added.
