UK Rejects Trump’s Demands Over Iran, Says Not Obliged to Follow US Orders

UK Work and Pensions Secretary, Pat McFadden, has criticized US President Donald Trump’s transactional leadership style, saying the UK is not obligated to comply with every request from the US, especially regarding the ongoing Iran crisis.
In a frank assessment of the US-UK relationship, McFadden responded to questions about Trump’s demand for ships to assist in securing the Strait of Hormuz, stressing that the UK would not blindly follow Washington’s directives.
McFadden explained that the UK government is fully aware of the rhetoric surrounding the issue but is prioritizing its own strategic decisions.
“When it comes to the US president’s comments, they are often framed in a very transactional manner,” McFadden said in an interview with Sky News.
Trump had expressed disappointment over the UK’s refusal to send ships to the strategic maritime route, urging that nations benefiting from the strait must contribute to its security.
However, McFadden made it clear that the UK’s decision would be based on its national interests, not simply on what the US demands.
“The relationship between the UK and the US is enduring, and we will always act in the best interests of our country,” McFadden added.
Instead of sending ships, the UK is reportedly considering the use of minesweeping drones for operations in the Strait of Hormuz, hoping to avoid escalating tensions.
While the UK is cautious in its response, McFadden reassured the public that the long-standing UK-US alliance remains solid despite disagreements.
