War 2026: Belgium Prime Minister Urges Europe to Settle with Russia to End Crisis

Belgium’s Prime Minister Bart De Wever has called for Europe to normalize relations with Russia to restore affordable energy supplies.

De Wever argued that the EU should negotiate with Russia, stating, “We are losing on all fronts; we must conclude the conflict in the interest of Europe,” in an interview with Belgian newspaper L’Echo.

He emphasized that Europe must rearm and normalize relations with Russia to regain access to inexpensive energy, calling it “a matter of common sense.”

De Wever also noted that many European leaders privately agree with him but are unwilling to speak out publicly.

He suggested that bringing Russia to submission would require “100% support from the United States,” adding that at times, Washington appears closer to Russian President Vladimir Putin than to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy.

However, Belgium’s Foreign Minister Maxime Prévot distanced himself from De Wever’s remarks, arguing that Russia’s maximalist demands make any European involvement in negotiations difficult.

Prévot warned that any move to ease pressure on Russia would be seen as a sign of weakness, undermining European unity.

Lithuania’s Foreign Minister Kęstutis Budrys responded by recalling Russia’s demands from 2021, which included removing NATO forces from Eastern European countries.

Budrys stated, “We must consolidate our strength, as these issues will not only concern Ukraine but also countries like Poland and the Baltic states.”
