ICPC Confirms No New Detention Request for El-Rufai

The Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) has clarified the legal status of Mallam Nasir Ahmad El-Rufai’s detention.
The Commission refuted reports suggesting it was seeking a fresh extension of his detention.
In a statement signed by John Okor Odey, Head of Media and Public Communication, the ICPC urged the public to rely on official updates and avoid spreading unverified information.
The statement confirmed that the ICPC appeared in court for the hearing of El-Rufai’s application filed on 6th March 2026, seeking to overturn the court’s order renewing his remand on 5th March 2026.
El-Rufai’s lawyer requested an adjournment to respond to the Commission’s submission.
The Magistrate adjourned the hearing to 31st March 2026.
The ICPC provided a timeline of the court-authorised detention, stating the initial remand order granted for 14 days to investigate allegations of money laundering and abuse of office.
When the initial order expired, the ICPC applied for a 14-day extension, which was granted by the court.
El-Rufai’s counsel had previously attempted to set aside the remand order, but the application was dismissed on 9th March 2026.
The ICPC reiterated that El-Rufai remains in lawful custody under the remand order issued on 5th March 2026.
The Commission assured the public that it is strictly following the court-mandated timeline and will submit a progress report as required.
