Jehovah’s Witnesses Revise Blood Transfusion Policy

Jehovah’s Witnesses have clarified their stance on blood transfusions, offering members more freedom in deciding the use of their own blood during medical treatments.

This update, shared in a video on the group’s official website on Friday, maintains the ban on receiving blood from others but introduces flexibility regarding the use of a person’s own blood, especially in surgeries and advanced medical treatments.

Gerrit Lösch, a member of the Governing Body, explained that this change is meant to help members make informed medical choices while staying true to biblical teachings.

Lösch clarified that while the overall prohibition against receiving blood remains in place, the scriptures do not specifically address the use of one’s own blood in medical contexts.

“Regarding the use of one’s own blood, a Christian must decide for themselves how their blood will be handled during surgery, medical tests, or ongoing therapy,” he explained.

He stated that members are now free to choose whether to allow procedures in which their blood is temporarily removed, stored, and later returned to the body.

“Some may choose to permit their blood to be stored and later given back. Others may object. Every Christian must make their own decision regarding the use of their blood in medical care,” Lösch added.

He also noted that practices like blood testing, dialysis, and the use of heart-lung machines have already been widely accepted by the community.

Jehovah’s Witnesses have traditionally rejected blood transfusions based on interpretations of biblical texts that prohibit the consumption or use of blood.

However, the organization has always emphasized that it is not opposed to modern medicine and often seeks alternative treatments that align with their beliefs.

This recent update highlights a shift towards allowing individual responsibility in medical decision-making while maintaining the core belief that accepting another person’s blood remains prohibited within the faith.
