Why I Dropped Ronaldo — Martinez

Portugal head coach Roberto Martinez has provided reasons for leaving Cristiano Ronaldo and Bernardo Silva out of the national squad for upcoming friendly matches.

While addressing reporters, Martinez emphasized that Ronaldo remains an essential part of Portugal’s plans for the 2026 World Cup.

This decision comes as Ronaldo is excluded from the squad for the upcoming international fixtures against the United States and Mexico.

Martinez revealed the squad for the friendly games on Friday, March 20, confirming that these matches would be the final international games before the World Cup in North America.

The coach explained that Ronaldo’s absence was due to a minor muscle issue but assured that he would be available again in a week or two.

“The World Cup is not at risk,” Martinez confirmed. “It’s a minor injury, and we expect him to return in about one or two weeks.”

Martinez also praised Ronaldo’s physical condition, noting that the forward had been putting in significant physical work this season, indicating he is in excellent shape.

Ronaldo hasn’t played since February 28, when he left the field injured during Al-Nassr’s 3-1 victory over Al-Fayha in the Saudi Pro League.

Al-Nassr later confirmed that Ronaldo had sustained a hamstring injury and traveled to Madrid for treatment.

In addition to Ronaldo, midfielder Bernardo Silva was also omitted from the squad. Martinez explained that Silva’s absence was due to a technical decision, based on medical advice from Manchester City.
