ADC Slams £746 Million Nigeria-UK Port Deal, Calls it a ‘Mugu Agreement’

The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has criticised the £746 million port rehabilitation agreement between Nigeria and the United Kingdom.
Recall that the deal, signed during President Bola Tinubu’s recent visit to London, is to support the rehabilitation of the Tin Can and Apapa ports in Lagos.
Reacting, the opposition party described the agreement as a “mugu agreement” that allegedly favours the British economy while burdening Nigeria with substantial debt.
In a statement issued by its National Publicity Secretary, Bolaji Abdullahi, the ADC argued that the deal mainly benefits the UK’s manufacturing sector.
The party claimed that the agreement is a commercial loan structured to ensure that much of the funding returns to the UK through procurement of British goods and services.
The ADC also expressed concern that the deal could leave Nigeria at a disadvantage.
They called on the government to disclose full details of the agreement, including interest rates, repayment terms, and local participation in the project.
The ADC further demanded clarity on job creation, the timeline for completion, skills transfer, and whether Nigerian small and medium enterprises would be involved.
