Downplay Politics, Focus on Security – Ndume Urges Tinubu After Maiduguri Bombings

Borno South Senator, Ali Ndume, has urged President Bola Tinubu to downplay his 2027 presidential re-election bid and instead prioritize addressing the country’s security challenges.

Ndume made the call in a statement released on Tuesday.

The statement followed bombings that rocked parts of Maiduguri on Monday, allegedly carried out by the Boko Haram terrorist group. The attacks resulted in 23 deaths.

In his response, Ndume appealed to President Tinubu to focus on governance, particularly the safety and welfare of Nigerians, stressing that this remains the government’s primary responsibility.

“We seem to have abandoned the people for politics. The people that will vote are dying,” Ndume said.

He urged Tinubu to concentrate on improving the security of lives and citizens’ welfare, stating that failure to do so would alienate the government from the people.

Ndume further added, “If there is no improvement in their welfare and security, the government becomes their enemy.”

The senator called for immediate action on security, saying the public must see visible efforts being made to address the situation.

He also urged security agencies to intensify investigations and intelligence gathering to prevent terrorist attacks.

“The perpetrators of the Maiduguri bombings must be arrested,” he said, referring to one of the IEDs used in the attack, which was reportedly detonated from a tricycle.

He called for swift investigations to identify the owners and potential perpetrators behind the attack.

Ndume, who sympathized with the Borno State government and the victims’ families, criticized the mere press statement issued by President Tinubu on the incident.

He stated, “It is not enough to put up a strongly worded press statement. What has happened in Borno and other states calls for national mourning.”

Ndume suggested that if President Tinubu could not visit Borno, he should send Vice President Kashim Shettima to reassure Nigerians that the government is committed to their welfare and security.
