Europe Rejects Trump’s Call for Strait of Hormuz Security Support

European leaders have rejected Donald Trump’s request for allied nations to secure the Strait of Hormuz.
This came as EU foreign ministers met in Brussels to discuss rising oil prices linked to the ongoing US-Israel conflict with Iran.
Trump had urged countries like the UK, China, France, Japan, South Korea, and NATO members to deploy naval forces.
He warned that failure to respond could harm the future of the alliance.
Despite efforts to rally support for a multinational coalition, details about the proposed arrangement remain unclear.
Several European allies showed caution about committing military resources to the volatile region amid active conflict.
EU foreign ministers have requested clearer objectives and timelines from the US regarding the conflict.
Germany’s Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul stated that Berlin had no plans to participate in military operations.
He stressed that transparency from Washington and Israel is crucial to understanding their objectives.
Wadephul added that a security framework for the region should be developed with neighboring states once goals are clear.
Germany’s spokesperson Stefan Kornelius emphasized that NATO has not decided on involvement.
He reiterated that the conflict does not fall under NATO’s mandate, as it is an alliance for defense.
Germany’s Defence Minister Boris Pistorius questioned the need for European frigates in the region.
He pointed out that the powerful US Navy should be sufficient to secure the strait.
Greek officials also confirmed their lack of participation in any military deployment.
Italy’s Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani supported the position, stating that Rome is not involved in naval operations in the region.
Estonia’s Foreign Minister Margus Tsahkna called for clarity on Washington’s broader strategy.
Poland’s Foreign Minister Radek Sikorski urged the US to follow diplomatic channels if seeking support.
