NAFDAC Alerts Nigerians to Fake Cancer Drug Circulating in the Country

NAFDAC has raised concerns over the circulation of a counterfeit breast cancer drug in Nigeria, warning of serious health risks.
The fake product, Phesgo® 600mg, was identified after complaints from the Lagos University Teaching Hospital (LUTH-NSIA).
Patients had brought in suspected counterfeit batches, B2346B16 and C3809C5, for treatment.
One batch, C3809C5, was found to have a vial volume of 20mL, double the expected 10mL.
Phesgo 600mg is used in the treatment of breast cancer by killing cancer cells and slowing their growth.
Roche, the legitimate manufacturer, stated that only pictures of the samples were made available for investigation, as physical samples were not submitted.
The company identified several discrepancies that confirmed the products were falsified, including a non-existent batch number and mismatched barcode.
It also noted the absence of a tamper-evident label and visible differences in packaging.
The batch number B2346B16 has been linked to counterfeit cases in multiple countries, including Nigeria, Turkey, and the Philippines.
NAFDAC warned that counterfeit drugs pose a major public health threat due to their failure to meet safety and quality standards.
NAFDAC has directed zonal directors and state coordinators to remove these counterfeit drugs from circulation and to increase surveillance.
Healthcare providers and the public are urged to report any suspected fake or substandard medicines to NAFDAC via its official reporting channels.
