2027: Aspirants free to run against Tinubu — APC

The All Progressives Congress (APC) has confirmed that no member will be barred from contesting for the party’s presidential ticket in 2027.

This comes despite the party’s clear support for President Bola Tinubu’s re-election bid.

Party leaders have openly backed Tinubu, but they stress that the contest will remain open to other interested aspirants.

Chidi Duru, the party’s Deputy National Organising Secretary, emphasized that internal democracy is a core principle of the APC.

He mentioned that although a consensus candidate may emerge, no member will be prevented from vying for the presidential ticket.

“It is not that we are likely, we will have a consensus. That is an indication of the APC being a democratic party. But should any member wish to contest, they are welcome to do so,” he stated.

Duru explained that while consensus arrangements are common, the party cannot shut out aspirants eager to test their popularity.

He added that incumbents often enjoy an advantage, especially if party members are satisfied with their performance.

This aligns with the principle of “right of first refusal,” where well-performing leaders are given priority for re-election.

He stressed that political parties must ensure candidates fulfill their mandates, as performance determines re-election prospects.

“If a candidate performs well, the party is more likely to present them again to the electorate. But if they fail to meet expectations, the party risks losing the election by retaining them,” Duru stated.

He further noted that this principle applies beyond the presidency to governors and other elected officials, arguing that those who perform well should be allowed to serve a second term.

Duru acknowledged that concerns about internal disputes may arise but pointed out that the constitution guarantees elected officials, including the president and governors, the right to seek a second term.

The APC is set to further discuss party matters at its national convention, scheduled to hold in Abuja from March 27 to March 28, 2026.
