SSANU Sets Ultimatum, Threatens Indefinite Strike

The Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU) has issued a stern warning that it will commence an indefinite nationwide strike if the Federal Government does not finalize the renegotiation of the 2009 agreement by the end of April 2026.

This warning was made public in a communiqué on Sunday in Abuja, following the 54th National Executive Council (NEC) meeting at Ekiti State University and was signed by SSANU’s National President, Muhammad Ibrahim.

The union expressed frustration over the slow pace and lack of clarity in the renegotiation process with non-teaching unions, highlighting the absence of clear timelines and firm commitments from the government.

SSANU urged the Federal Government to immediately reconvene discussions and conclude the process in a transparent, fair, and timely manner.

“In view of this, SSANU hereby issues a final ultimatum to the Federal Government from April 1 to April 30, 2026, to conclude the renegotiation process and sign the agreement,” Ibrahim stated.

He emphasized that failure to meet the deadline would compel the union to collaborate with the Joint Action Committee (JAC), which includes the Non-Academic Staff Union of Educational and Associated Institutions, to begin an indefinite strike across universities.

The union also raised concerns about delayed salary payments and the non-implementation of wage increments, which have worsened the economic hardship among its members.

SSANU further called for the immediate payment of all outstanding salaries and urged the adoption of a unified salary payment system, recommending the use of Remita for improved efficiency and transparency.
