Premier League Admits Arsenal Benefitted from Two Major VAR Errors

Premier League officials have confirmed that Arsenal benefitted from a significant VAR error in their 1-0 win over Brighton earlier this month.

Bukayo Saka’s early goal secured the victory for the Gunners at the Amex Stadium.

Meanwhile, Manchester City were held to a 2-2 draw by Nottingham Forest, tightening the title race.

Brighton felt they should have been awarded a penalty after Mats Wieffer was fouled by Gabriel Martinelli at the end of the first half.

Referee Chris Kavanagh allowed play to continue, and VAR official Michael Salisbury did not intervene.

However, the Premier League’s Key Match Incidents (KMI) Panel later ruled that a penalty should have been awarded to Brighton.

The panel stated: “Martinelli is not looking at the ball, holds Weiffer into the area, and prevents the Brighton player from challenging for the ball.”

The panel voted 4-1 in favour of awarding a penalty on the field and 3-2 that it was a missed VAR intervention.

This incident marks the second time Arsenal have avoided conceding a penalty this season.

In a previous match at Everton, William Saliba’s challenge on Thierno Barry was not penalized by VAR, despite Salisbury being the official in charge once again.

That decision also denied David Moyes’ men the chance to equalize from the spot.
