Social Media Storm Trails INEC Chairman Over Alleged Partisan X Account Amid Fresh Evidence Claims

Prof. Joash Ojo Amupitan, Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), is facing intense public scrutiny and renewed calls for his resignation after social media users linked him to an X (formerly Twitter) account alleged to have shared pro-APC content during the 2023 elections.
The controversy erupted on April 10, 2026, when screenshots circulating on X appeared to connect the account @joashamupitan, later changed to @Sundayvibe00, made private, and labelled a “parody,” to the INEC Chairman.
The account was alleged to have posted messages in March 2023 praising the APC’s performance with expressions such as “Victory is sure” while criticising opposition figures before it was swiftly altered following public backlash.
Further claims amplified by @OurFavOnlineDoc suggested technical links, including two-factor authentication reportedly tied via WhatsApp to a phone number said to match one listed on Amupitan’s official CV alongside his university email.
Additional screenshots also pointed to an OPay account bearing his full name allegedly linked to the same number, intensifying debate over digital ownership and identity verification.
In response, INEC and Professor Amupitan dismissed the allegations in a statement issued on April 10, 2026, through his Chief Press Secretary and Media Adviser, Adedayo Oketola, describing them as baseless, fabricated, and entirely unfounded.
The statement stressed that the INEC Chairman does not operate any personal X account and has never engaged in partisan commentary or political activity in any capacity.
It further described the claims as a coordinated misinformation campaign aimed at undermining public confidence in the electoral body and its leadership.
Amupitan, a Senior Advocate of Nigeria and law professor appointed by President Bola Tinubu in October 2025 to succeed Professor Mahmood Yakubu, has continued to face scrutiny over perceived proximity to the ruling All Progressives Congress.
Social media users and opposition voices argue that any perception of bias by the electoral umpire could weaken trust ahead of the 2027 general elections, with some demanding his resignation or removal to preserve INEC’s neutrality.
As of Saturday, April 11, 2026, the issue continues to trend on X, with Nigerians divided over the official denial and the technical evidence circulating online.
INEC has urged the public to disregard the allegations and rely solely on verified official communication channels for accurate information.
