[Public Square with Senator Reformed] Respect Is Fading: What Happened to Basic Human Decency

Respect used to be a normal part of daily life where younger people honoured elders, people listened before speaking, and public behaviour carried a sense of dignity, but things have changed in ways that are hard to ignore, and many now speak without caution, react without thought, and treat others in ways that would have once been unacceptable, and this change has slowly affected how people see one another in homes schools and public spaces

One of the clearest signs of this change is how people now relate with authority in homes schools workplaces and public spaces because instructions are questioned with pride and correction is often seen as an attack, and many no longer see the value in listening quietly and learning but prefer to rush into arguments even when it is unnecessary, and this has created a situation where guidance is no longer respected as it should be

Social behaviour has also been shaped by online communication where distance and anonymity make it easier to insult others without thinking of consequences, and words are thrown around carelessly while many forget there is a real human being on the other side of the screen with feelings and dignity, and over time this attitude spreads into real life making people less patient and more aggressive in everyday interactions

In families, respect has taken a different form where conversations between parents and children often lack patience, and correction is met with resistance instead of understanding, and many homes now struggle with communication because everyone wants to be heard but few are willing to listen, and this has weakened the bond that once made family life a place of guidance and order

Public spaces also reflect this decline because simple courtesies like waiting one’s turn speaking politely and showing consideration for others are becoming less common, and people push their way forward ignore rules and act as though only their needs matter, and this behaviour creates tension in buses markets offices and even religious gatherings where order is expected

Influence plays a strong role in this change especially among young people who copy what they see from celebrities online figures and peers without asking whether it is right or wrong, and when disrespect gains attention or popularity it begins to look acceptable and slowly becomes normal behaviour, and this has made it harder for values that once guided society to remain strong

There is also a belief in some circles that respect is outdated or unnecessary but this thinking has created more problems than solutions because it removes balance from human relationships, and respect is not fear or silence but recognition of the value of others and without it society becomes loud but unstable and difficult to manage

As another saying goes a house cannot stand without a strong foundation and the same applies to society because when respect is removed from daily life progress becomes difficult and what looks like freedom without respect eventually turns into confusion disorder and loss of direction for both young and old

We must begin to rethink how we treat one another in speech action and attitude because respect is not old fashioned but necessary for peaceful living, and it starts with listening well speaking carefully and correcting with wisdom instead of anger which builds trust strengthens relationships and restores order in daily interactions

In the end respect is fading not because it has lost value but because it has been neglected and if nothing changes the damage will continue to spread in homes schools workplaces and public life, and a society that loses respect will struggle to maintain order while a generation that ignores decency will find it difficult to build lasting peace or meaningful progress.
