ADC Demands INEC Chairman Amupitan’s Exit Over Alleged Bias, Cites Social Media Controversy

The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has called on Professor Joash Ojo Amupitan, Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), to resign immediately over fresh allegations of bias in favour of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) linked to archived social media posts.
The opposition party, which has consistently questioned Amupitan’s leadership, made the demand on Saturday while reacting to reports that old posts from an X (formerly Twitter) account associated with him contained pro-APC remarks including statements interpreted as supportive of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.
The controversy deepened after US-based Nigerian academic Farooq Kperogi published a column drawing attention to the alleged posts, arguing that they raise serious concerns about INEC’s neutrality and calling for the chairman’s resignation, a development that triggered widespread debate over the authenticity and implications of the claims.
In response, Adedayo Oketola, Chief Press Secretary and Media Adviser to the INEC Chairman, dismissed the allegations, warning against impersonators and cybercriminals allegedly using fake identities to spread misinformation while reiterating INEC’s commitment under Amupitan to delivering free, fair and credible elections and urging the public to rely only on verified communication channels.
However, the ADC rejected the clarification in a strongly worded statement in which party spokesman Bolaji Abdullahi described the development as a serious blow to the credibility of the electoral system.
Abdullahi stated that the alleged revelation linking a pro-Bola Ahmed Tinubu post from 2023 to the INEC Chairman is not only troubling but also undermines public trust in the nation’s electoral process.
He maintained that in any democracy the electoral umpire must be beyond reproach and must not only be independent in practice but also in public perception without a shadow of doubt.
He further criticized what he described as attempts to distort or erase digital evidence of past political leanings calling it a direct attack on transparency and accountability.
According to him a person who seeks to manipulate records to protect himself cannot be trusted with safeguarding the mandate of millions adding that the referee cannot appear to be wearing the jersey of one of the competing sides.
The ADC spokesman insisted that Professor Amupitan must step aside without delay warning that anything short of resignation would amount to a disregard for the Nigerian people and a threat to democratic credibility.
The party also disclosed plans to escalate its petitions to relevant local and international bodies including foreign governments and the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) while threatening sustained civic actions until the INEC Chairman vacates office.
Professor Amupitan a Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN) and professor of law was sworn in as INEC Chairman in October 2025 succeeding Professor Mahmood Yakubu.
