APC Dominates Ogun Assembly As PDP Lawmakers Defect To Party

The Ogun State House of Assembly is now controlled entirely by the APC after all remaining PDP lawmakers defected to the party.
This shift eliminates opposition presence, leaving the 26-member Assembly fully under APC control.
The change started in November 2023 when the Court of Appeal annulled the election of a PDP lawmaker from Ikenne State Constituency and ordered the APC candidate to be given a Certificate of Return, reducing PDP’s seats in the House.
Further defections followed, with six PDP lawmakers, including Minority Leader Lukman Adeleye, aligning with the APC after the party’s national convention.
Adeleye explained that internal divisions within the PDP leadership and the need for political realignment ahead of future elections were reasons for the move, stating, “We now have a unified House, all APC members.”
The Ogun PDP condemned the defections, calling it a betrayal of voters’ trust, with State Secretary Sunday Solarin accusing the defectors of abandoning their party while keeping seats secured under its platform.
Solarin argued that lawmakers who no longer align with PDP should vacate their seats and seek fresh mandates under the APC.
The Ogun APC defended the defections, calling them a result of Governor Dapo Abiodun’s successful leadership, with Publicity Secretary Nuberu Femi stating that the move would bring stability and enhance governance.
Olayinka Folarin, National President of the Committee for the Defence of Human Rights (CDHR), warned that a one-party legislature could harm democratic plurality, stressing that it limits diverse voices in governance.
The situation has sparked mixed reactions, with discussions about party loyalty, democratic representation, and governance implications for Ogun State.
