Spain dethrone Argentina as FIFA’s world No. 1, Nigeria remain 26th globally

Spain have replaced Argentina at the summit of the latest FIFA Men’s World Ranking following their triumph at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, ending Argentina’s two-year reign as the highest-ranked national team in the world.
The Spanish national team moved to the number one position after defeating Argentina 1-0 in the World Cup final, with the victory strengthening their position as one of the dominant forces in international football.
Spain’s rise to the top marks a return to the position they last held before Argentina reclaimed the number one spot, with FIFA’s ranking system rewarding their impressive performances throughout the tournament.
Argentina, who entered the World Cup as the defending champions and previous world number one team, dropped to second place after losing the final against Spain.
Nigeria’s Super Eagles maintained their position as the 26th-ranked team in the world, remaining among the top football nations globally despite failing to move higher on the latest ranking table.
The latest ranking reflects changes brought about by results from major international matches, particularly the outcome of the 2026 World Cup, where teams gained or lost ranking points based on their performances.
Spain’s achievement adds to their recent resurgence on the global stage, following a new generation of players who have helped the country return to the forefront of international football.
Argentina, led by captain Lionel Messi, had enjoyed a strong period in world football after winning the 2022 World Cup and Copa América titles, but their defeat in the 2026 final affected their position in the FIFA rankings.
Morocco also recorded a historic improvement in the latest ranking after their impressive World Cup campaign, reaching their highest-ever position in FIFA’s ranking history.
The latest FIFA rankings continue to place European and South American football powers among the leading teams, while African nations such as Nigeria and Morocco maintain strong representation among the world’s top-ranked sides.
FIFA’s ranking system is updated based on results from recognised international matches, with teams gaining points for victories and strong performances against highly ranked opponents.
The new ranking means Spain begin the post-World Cup era as the team to beat, while Argentina will look to regain the top position in future international fixtures.
