Mbappé Eyes Ballon d’Or Win in 2026

Real Madrid forward Kylian Mbappé believes 2026 could finally be the year he wins the Ballon d’Or, saying his recent achievements have strengthened his chances of claiming football’s biggest individual prize.

The France captain made the statement on Monday during a press conference ahead of Real Madrid’s UEFA Champions League meeting with Inter Milan, where he spoke about his ambitions and his chances of being named the world’s best player.

Mbappé said playing for Real Madrid, a club with a strong history of producing Ballon d’Or winners, naturally places him among the players considered for the award.

“When you play for Real Madrid, the best club in the world, people associate you with this type of award,” the 27-year-old said, adding that many supporters have already spoken to him about his Ballon d’Or chances.

The French striker pointed to his performance at the 2026 FIFA World Cup as a major reason he believes he is in contention, after becoming the tournament’s all-time leading goalscorer with 22 goals across his World Cup appearances.

Mbappé also enjoyed a prolific season at club level, scoring 42 goals in 44 appearances for Real Madrid, although the Spanish giants ended the campaign without a major trophy.

Despite his confidence, the forward acknowledged that the final decision belongs to Ballon d’Or voters, insisting that journalists will decide who deserves the honour.

“I always think I’m the best player in the world, but everyone has their own opinion,” Mbappé said, adding that it was not a debate he needed to settle himself.

The Ballon d’Or remains one of the few major individual awards missing from Mbappé’s collection, despite his World Cup triumph with France in 2018, multiple domestic titles and years among the world’s elite players.

Mbappé will face strong competition for the award, with several players expected to challenge for the honour based on their performances at club and international level.

As Real Madrid begin another Champions League campaign, Mbappé will hope a successful season with the Spanish giants can strengthen his case and bring him closer to his first Ballon d’Or triumph.
