Tupac Murder Trial Begins 30 Years After Rapper’s Death

The trial of Duane “Keffe D” Davis, the former gang leader accused of orchestrating the murder of legendary rapper Tupac Shakur, has begun in Las Vegas, three decades after the killing that shocked the music world.

The proceedings opened on Monday with jury selection and are expected to last about a month. Davis, 63, faces life imprisonment without parole if convicted.

Prosecutors allege that Davis, a former leader of the South Side Compton Crips, arranged Shakur’s killing and supplied the firearm used in the drive-by shooting on September 7, 1996.

Shakur, popularly known as 2Pac, was fatally wounded while travelling in a car after attending a Mike Tyson boxing match at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas. He died six days later at the age of 25.

The killing became one of the most high-profile unsolved cases in American history, with decades of speculation surrounding the identity of the shooter and the motive behind the attack.

Prosecutors are expected to revisit the long-running rivalry between Death Row Records, associated with Shakur and Marion “Suge” Knight, and Bad Boy Records, led by Sean “Diddy” Combs and featuring The Notorious B.I.G.

According to prosecutors, the events leading to the shooting began after Shakur and Knight assaulted Orlando “Baby Lane” Anderson, Davis’s nephew and a member of the South Side Compton Crips, following an earlier confrontation.

Investigators said Davis was later linked to the case after details from his 2019 memoir resurfaced.

In the book, he acknowledged being in the Cadillac from which shots were fired and admitted handing a gun to individuals in the vehicle, though he denied knowing who pulled the trigger.

Davis was arrested in September 2023 and has pleaded not guilty.

“I’m innocent. I ain’t killed nobody. Never did ever kill nobody,” he said in a 2025 interview, maintaining that prosecutors have no evidence placing him at the scene of the crime.

His defence team has argued that Davis’s statements were exaggerated and that parts of his memoir were influenced by his co-author.

The trial is not expected to reveal every detail of the killing, as other occupants of the Cadillac have died.

However, prosecutors hope the case will finally provide answers in one of hip-hop’s most enduring mysteries.

Meanwhile, Shakur’s family members have continued to seek accountability, with his stepbrother filing a wrongful death lawsuit, arguing that other individuals involved in the rapper’s death have never been brought to justice.
