RCCG Pastor Collapses, Dies While Preaching on Certainty of Death at Funeral

Residents of Aleto community in Eleme, Rivers State, as well as members of the Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCCG) in the area, were thrown into shock and mourning on Friday, October 2, after the minister officiating at a funeral service suddenly collapsed while delivering a sermon and was later pronounced dead.

The deceased cleric, identified as Deacon Steve Eyo, a resident pastor in the community, had been invited to officiate at the funeral, where he preached on the topic, “The Certainty of Death and Hope Beyond”.

According to eyewitnesses, Eyo had told the mourners that death was inevitable and that no one could escape it, likening the inevitability of death to a visit to the market, where some people leave early while others remain until late.

He was quoted as saying that, in the same manner, some people die young while others live to an advanced age, stressing that death could come at a time when it was least expected.

However, barely 15 minutes into the sermon, the cleric suddenly collapsed, sending the microphone crashing to the floor with a loud thud.

The sudden incident initially left some mourners wondering whether the pastor was illustrating the abruptness of death, particularly because he had been speaking about the subject moments earlier, until it became apparent that he was in genuine distress.

He was immediately taken to the rear of the church, where members of the choir and other ministers gathered around him in prayer, while individuals with medical knowledge reportedly administered first aid.

A medical personnel at the scene later observed that the cleric had stopped breathing, prompting those present to rush him to the nearest hospital in the same ambulance that had been hired to convey the remains of the deceased to the burial location.
