CAF Announces Historic WAFCON Prize Boost

The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has increased the prize money for the winners of the 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) to $2 million, doubling the previous champions’ reward in what has been described as a major boost for women’s football on the continent.
The new prize package represents a 100 per cent increase from the $1 million awarded to the winners of the previous edition of the tournament, as CAF continues its drive to improve investment, competitiveness and recognition for women’s football in Africa.
CAF President Dr Patrice Motsepe announced the increase as part of efforts to reward the growth of the women’s game and encourage national teams to compete at a higher level.
The 2026 WAFCON, scheduled to take place in Morocco, will bring together Africa’s leading women’s national teams as they compete for the continent’s biggest women’s football prize.
The decision is expected to excite teams such as Nigeria’s Super Falcons, who are the most successful side in the history of the competition and will be aiming to strengthen their dominance on the continental stage.
Beyond the winners’ prize, CAF’s latest move is part of a wider financial commitment aimed at raising the profile of women’s football and providing greater incentives for players, coaches and football federations across Africa.
The increase comes amid growing attention towards women’s football globally, with governing bodies investing more resources into competitions, player development and improved welfare packages.
CAF has in recent years introduced higher financial rewards across several competitions as part of its ambition to make African football more competitive and commercially attractive.
For the participating nations at WAFCON 2026, the bigger prize purse is expected to add extra motivation as teams battle for continental glory and the opportunity to make history.
