Amusan Drops in Global Rankings

Nigeria’s Tobi Amusan, the women’s 100m hurdles world record holder, has slipped to third place in the latest global athletics rankings.
Amusan increased her ranking points from 1,379 to 1,385 following strong showings at two Diamond League meetings in China.
She clocked 12.41 seconds in Shanghai and a season’s best of 12.28 seconds in Xiamen, finishing second behind American Masai Russell at the latter event.
Russell’s consecutive victories at both meetings elevated her to the top of the world rankings, posting 12.25 seconds in Shanghai and 12.14 seconds in Xiamen, just two hundredths shy of Amusan’s world record of 12.12 seconds.
American Grace Stark occupies second place with 1,386 points, while Amusan holds third with 1,385 points.
Russell, who was fourth in the rankings just over a week ago, has emerged as a major contender to Amusan this season both on the track and in global standings.
After her Xiamen race, Russell expressed confidence in her progress, stating that she continues to grow closer to breaking the world record.
She credited her consistency, focus, and self-belief for her rise in performance and rankings this season.
Amusan set the current world record at 12.12 seconds during the 2022 World Athletics Championships in Eugene, becoming Nigeria’s first world champion in athletics.
Despite dropping to third in the rankings, Amusan remains a leading contender in the women’s 100m hurdles as the 2026 season builds toward major championships.
