Oyo Declares Tuesday Public Holiday for Hijrah 1448AH Celebration

The Oyo State Government has declared Tuesday, 16 June, 2026, a work-free day to mark the Islamic New Year, Hijrah 1448AH, as part of efforts to honour the significance of the occasion to the Muslim community in the state.

The announcement was contained in a statement issued by the Commissioner for Information, Prince Dotun Oyelade, who explained that the Hijrah commemorates the migration of Prophet Muhammad from Mecca to Medina in 622AD and remains a key event in Islamic history.

He stated that the holiday was approved as a gesture of respect and solidarity with Muslim faithful in the state, adding that residents are encouraged to use the period for prayers seeking peace, unity, and prosperity across Oyo State and Nigeria.

Oyelade further urged citizens to reflect on the teachings of the Hijrah and strengthen bonds of brotherhood, noting that the celebration should serve as an opportunity for collective reflection and renewed commitment to harmonious coexistence.
