Ex-Generals Blame Government Over Death of Retired Army Spokesman

Retired military officers have criticized the Federal Government’s handling of the situation, describing the incident as evidence of worsening insecurity and institutional failure to protect citizens, including retired personnel.
Retired Brigadier-General Bashir Adewinbi said the killing sends a damaging message about Nigeria’s security situation, warning that citizens may be forced to take self-defence measures if the trend continues.
“As it is now, everyone, not just retired generals, may have to defend themselves by any means necessary, which is a very unfortunate situation,” Adewinbi said, describing the development as “pathetic” and calling for urgent reforms in the security system.
He further argued that the death of a senior officer in captivity highlights the need for improved technological and operational capacity in tackling insecurity across the country.
Retired Brigadier-General John Sura also described the incident as deeply unfortunate, saying it underscores the vulnerability of all Nigerians regardless of status or background.
“It could have been any of us, whether a general, senator, or governor, which shows that no one is truly safe under the current security situation,” Sura said, warning that public confidence in state protection is being severely undermined.
