KWASU Clarifies Minimum Wage Allegation

Kwara State University (KWASU), Malete, has dismissed reports alleging that some of its workers are being paid below the national minimum wage, stating that the individuals referenced in the viral claims are not employees of the institution.

The university clarified that the allegation circulating on social media and some online platforms is misleading and does not reflect the actual salary structure of its workforce.

According to KWASU management, the names and cases being circulated in the viral posts were not staff of the university, and therefore cannot be used to judge the institution’s wage compliance or labour practices.

The clarification comes amid renewed public discussion on wage implementation in Nigeria’s public institutions, especially following national adjustments to the minimum wage structure across federal and state establishments.

University officials maintained that KWASU has already aligned with the approved minimum wage framework, stressing that all legitimate staff members are being paid according to applicable salary structures approved by government and regulatory bodies.

The institution also referenced its ongoing compliance with labour agreements and salary adjustments previously implemented across academic and non-academic staff unions within the university system.

In earlier engagements, the KWASU branch of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) had commended the university management for implementing the new minimum wage structure, describing the decision as a relief to workers amid rising economic pressures.

That union position, according to the university, further contradicts the viral narrative suggesting that staff are being underpaid below statutory requirements.

The university warned that spreading unverified claims about salaries and worker welfare could damage institutional reputation and mislead the public about its labour relations.

It also urged members of the public and social media users to verify sensitive employment-related information through official university communication channels before publication or sharing.

KWASU reaffirmed its commitment to fair labour practices, staff welfare, and full compliance with national wage regulations as applicable to public universities in Nigeria.
