FG Breaks Silence On Electricity Tariff Hike Rumours

The Federal Government has dismissed reports about an imminent increase in electricity tariffs, assuring Nigerians that there is no plan to raise electricity charges for consumers connected to the national grid.
The clarification was issued following widespread concerns among electricity users over reports claiming that another tariff adjustment was being considered by the authorities.
The government said such reports were misleading, stressing that any changes to electricity tariffs would only follow due regulatory processes and official announcements from relevant authorities.
The Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC), which regulates electricity tariffs in the country, has previously stated that tariff reviews must follow established principles, including considerations around service quality, customer consultation and protection of vulnerable consumers.
Officials explained that the government’s current priority in the power sector is improving electricity supply, expanding metering, reducing estimated billing and protecting consumers rather than introducing additional financial pressure.
The development comes amid continued public concerns over electricity costs following previous tariff adjustments, particularly for Band A customers, which sparked debates over affordability and the quality of power supply being delivered.
The government maintained that Nigerians should rely on information from official channels and disregard unverified claims about electricity tariff increases.
Stakeholders in the power sector have continued to call for reforms that will address challenges affecting electricity generation, transmission and distribution while ensuring consumers receive improved service for payments made.
The Federal Government said it remains committed to ongoing power sector reforms aimed at achieving a more reliable electricity system and improving access to affordable power nationwide.
