Tinubu Returns to Abuja

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has returned to Abuja after spending six days in Lagos, where he marked Nigeria’s 66th Independence anniversary and undertook a series of cultural and traditional engagements.

Tinubu departed Lagos on Monday evening after arriving in the city on Tuesday, September 29, following his annual vacation in London and Paris.

The President’s return was confirmed by his Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, who said Tinubu had concluded his six-day visit to the former seat of government.

The President’s principal public engagement during the visit was his national broadcast on October 1 to commemorate Nigeria’s 66th Independence anniversary.

In the broadcast, Tinubu described the next phase of his administration as an “age of prosperity” after what he referred to as an earlier “age of reform”.

Later on October 1, the President attended the national premiere of MKO, a documentary on the life and political struggle of the late Chief Moshood Kashimawo Abiola and the historic June 12 pro-democracy struggle.

The screening was held at the Wole Soyinka Centre for Culture and Creative Arts in Lagos and brought attention to Abiola’s place in Nigeria’s political history.

On Sunday, Tinubu also visited the Oba of Lagos, Oba Rilwan Babatunde Akiolu, at the monarch’s Iga Iduganran Palace on Lagos Island.

The Lagos visit followed Tinubu’s extended stay abroad, where he spent his annual vacation in the United Kingdom and France before returning to Nigeria on September 29.

During the European trip, Tinubu was also reported to have held a private dinner with French President Emmanuel Macron at the Élysée Palace in Paris on September 17.

Tinubu did not personally attend the 81st Session of the United Nations General Assembly in New York during the period, as Vice President Kashim Shettima led Nigeria’s delegation to the international gathering.

The President’s return to Abuja restores his presence at the nation’s administrative centre after the six-day Lagos stay, with official activities expected to resume from the capital.
