Tinubu Holds Emergency Meeting on Security After Deadly Jilli Airstrike

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has convened an urgent security meeting with top military and intelligence leaders after the deadly airstrike at Jilli Market along the Borno–Yobe border.
The closed-door meeting, which took place at the Presidential Villa in Abuja, included the National Security Adviser, Nuhu Ribadu, as well as Service Chiefs and Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Disu.
The meeting was called shortly after the President returned from his official visits to Plateau, Ogun, Lagos, and Bayelsa states.
This emergency meeting comes after reports indicated that the airstrike at Jilli Market may have claimed the lives of up to 200 people, with many others injured and currently being treated in nearby hospitals.
Military sources have stated that the operation, conducted by the Nigerian Air Force as part of Operation Hadin Kai, was aimed at terrorist targets in the Jilli area, although civilian casualties have not been confirmed.
The attack has sparked widespread outrage, with Amnesty International condemning the airstrike and calling for an independent investigation into the incident.
Amnesty described the airstrike as a concerning example of disregard for civilian lives in conflict zones.
Borno State Governor Babagana Zulum confirmed that Jilli Market had been closed five years ago due to its suspected use by insurgents and their logistics networks.
Governor Zulum urged residents to avoid supporting or aiding extremist groups in the region.
Sources within the Presidency suggest that the meeting may involve detailed briefings on the incident as pressure builds from various quarters, especially from Northern stakeholders, for a transparent investigation into the airstrike.
Investigations are currently being conducted by military authorities.
