SSANU Gives FG 14 Days to Clear 2026 Agreement Arrears, Threatens Strike

The Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU) has issued the Federal Government a fresh 14 day ultimatum to complete the payment of outstanding arrears under the 2026 agreement reached with the union or face an indefinite strike.

SSANU President, Mohammed Ibrahim, announced the decision on Monday in Abuja while presenting resolutions reached at the union’s National Executive Council (NEC) meeting held over the weekend at the Federal University, Uyo, Akwa Ibom State.

Ibrahim said that although the 2026 agreement had expressly provided mechanisms for resolving the lingering issues affecting university workers, the implementation of the arrears payment had remained inconsistent across institutions.

He accused the Federal Government of adopting what he described as a haphazard approach to the disbursement of the outstanding payments, warning that the union would no longer countenance further delays.

The latest ultimatum comes days after SSANU issued an earlier warning over what it described as delays in implementing the 2026 FGN/SSANU Agreement.

The union had stated that it “will not accept unnecessary delays, selective implementation, marginalisation or any attempt to diminish the financial and non-financial provisions of the agreement.”

While acknowledging that implementation had commenced in some universities, Ibrahim said the process remained incomplete in others, citing funding and administrative challenges as factors responsible for the uneven execution.

He, however, insisted that agreements reached with the union must translate into concrete improvements in the welfare and conditions of its members rather than remain mere undertakings on paper.

“Agreements and NEC resolutions must translate into concrete action and measurable benefits for our members,” Ibrahim said.

The SSANU president subsequently directed the union’s branches and zones nationwide to intensify their monitoring of the implementation process, maintain accurate membership records, document instances of non-compliance or victimisation and forward timely reports to the National Secretariat.

He said the union would continue to monitor compliance closely as the 14 day deadline runs its course, with the possibility of an indefinite industrial action hanging over the Federal Government should the outstanding obligations remain unresolved.
