Messi Bows Out in Style, Scores as Argentina Beat Benin 3-0

Lionel Messi signed off from international football in emphatic fashion on Tuesday night, scoring once and providing two assists as world champions Argentina cruised to a 3-0 victory over Benin at the Monumental Stadium in Buenos Aires.

The October 6 encounter brought the curtain down on Messi’s illustrious 21-year international career, with the Argentina captain producing a decisive contribution in his final appearance for the national team.

Messi was directly involved in all three goals as Argentina secured a fitting victory before a home crowd gathered to bid farewell to one of the most decorated figures in the history of the game.

Former Super Eagles head coach Gernot Rohr was in charge of the Benin side for the farewell fixture.

According to Inter Miami, Messi opened the second half by delivering the corner from which Nicolás Otamendi headed Argentina into the lead in the 48th minute.

The Argentine maestro turned provider again in the 61st minute, setting up Nico Paz for the hosts’ second goal before completing his own scoring contribution from the penalty spot 10 minutes later.

Messi calmly converted the 71st minute spot kick to seal Argentina’s 3-0 triumph and bring his international career to a memorable close.

Inter Miami, in its report on the encounter published on October 6, noted that Messi had been “directly involved in each of Argentina’s goals”, in what underlined the commanding influence he exerted throughout his final appearance for the world champions.
