BREAKING: Fresh Riyom Attack Leaves Herder Dead, Suspects Arrested

A Fulani herder has been killed in a violent incident in the Makera area of Riyom Local Government Area, Plateau State, fueling growing tensions between local communities.

The attack occurred at 11:55 a.m. on April 26, when suspected Berom militia members allegedly ambushed the herder, fatally wounding him and shooting several cattle.

According to security sources, the attack resulted in the deaths of six cattle, with around 20 others injured by gunshots.

This violence follows an earlier confrontation on April 24, in which two local hunters were killed, and another was injured during an attack attributed to armed Fulani bandits.

The recent incidents are believed to be part of a cycle of retaliatory violence stemming from prior attacks and cattle thefts in the region.

Troops from Operation ENDURING PEACE responded promptly to a distress call and were deployed to the site. Upon arrival, they found the herder dead, six cattle shot, and several others injured by gunfire.

The security forces pursued five fleeing suspects and arrested two, while others managed to escape.

The body of the deceased herder was retrieved and handed over to officials from the Miyetti Allah Cattle Breeders Association of Nigeria (MACBAN).

Tensions remain high in the area, with reports indicating that some locals are upset over the arrest of the suspects.

Riyom and other parts of Plateau State have been plagued by recurrent clashes between herders and farmers, prompting continuous security efforts to maintain peace.
