Hull City Clinch Premier League Promotion After Dramatic Middlesbrough Victory

Hull City have secured promotion to the English Premier League after defeating Middlesbrough 1-0 in the Championship play-off final on Saturday.

The victory makes Hull City the third club to earn promotion to the Premier League for the 2026/2027 season, joining Coventry City and Ipswich Town.

Hull became the first club since Blackpool to finish sixth in the regular Championship season and still achieve promotion through the play-offs.

The decisive moment came deep into stoppage time when striker Oli McBurnie capitalised on a costly goalkeeping error to score the winning goal in the 94th minute.

Middlesbrough goalkeeper Sol Brynn misjudged a cross, punching the ball into a dangerous area and allowing McBurnie to react quickest and prod the ball into the net.

For Middlesbrough, the defeat means another season in England’s second division despite their dramatic return to the play-offs following Southampton’s “Spygate” controversy earlier in the campaign.

Hull City will now prepare for life in the Premier League ahead of the 2026/2027 season.
