Obi Backs Pastor Adeboye, Urges Nigerians to Reject Divisive Narratives

Peter Obi, the Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate, has come to the defense of Pastor Enoch Adeboye, the General Overseer of the Redeemed Christian Church of God, following criticism over the alleged cancellation of a planned protest.
Obi cautioned citizens against narratives that could deepen ethnic or religious tensions in the country.
In a message shared on his verified X account on Thursday, he called on Nigerians to reflect on lessons from the 2023 general elections.
He pointed to Lagos as a key example, noting that political discussions there shifted away from governance and competence toward ethnic and tribal biases.
According to Obi, conversations that should have concentrated on national development and progress were instead steered toward divisive topics that undermined unity.
He stated, “Historically, when leaders cannot compete based on ideas, performance, character, or vision, some exploit divisions based on ethnicity, religion, or identity.”
Obi warned that such tactics are re-emerging as future elections approach.
He stressed that certain narratives are deliberately being amplified to create mistrust among the populace.
Regarding criticisms directed at Adeboye, Obi described the cleric as one of Nigeria’s leading religious figures.
He highlighted that the pastor’s teachings have consistently emphasized peace, reconciliation, prayer, and national cohesion.
Obi also pointed out that Adeboye has met public criticism with humility, restraint, wisdom, and grace.
The former governor of Anambra State further emphasized that the responsibility for national change should not be placed solely on senior leaders.
He encouraged younger Nigerians to take a more active role in driving reforms and advancing the nation.
Obi called on youths to resist being drawn into campaigns of hatred or division.
He concluded that Nigeria’s advancement relies on unity and collective responsibility rather than narrow self-interest.
