Atiku Picks Amaechi as Running Mate

The Presidential candidate of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), Atiku Abubakar, has selected former Minister of Transportation, Chibuike Rotimi Amaechi, as his running mate ahead of the 2027 general elections.
The development was confirmed on Saturday by Leader Sampson, the immediate past Chairman of the ADC in Rivers State, who spoke with journalists.
Amaechi, who previously contested the ADC presidential primary, lost to Atiku Abubakar but maintained that he did not enter the race to become a vice-presidential candidate.
Before the primary, Amaechi had publicly stated that his intention was solely to contest for the party’s presidential ticket, while rejecting the outcome of the exercise, which some party members described as controversial.
Leader Sampson confirmed the development, saying ‘Yes’ when asked if Amaechi had accepted the running mate offer.
The selection is seen as a consolidation move within the opposition ahead of the 2027 elections and effectively signals a reconciliatory arrangement following the primary contest.
The decision is also understood to follow a series of closed-door engagements within the opposition coalition, including reported meetings between Atiku and Amaechi aimed at resolving internal disagreements.
Further official announcements and reactions from key political stakeholders are expected in the coming days as preparations for the 2027 elections intensify.
