Former Army Spokesperson Rabe Abubakar Dies in Bandits’ Captivity

The Katsina State Government has confirmed the death of retired Major General Rabe Abubakar, who passed away while in the custody of bandits, describing the incident as a tragic loss to both the state and the country.
The announcement was contained in a statement issued on Saturday by the Commissioner for Internal Security and Home Affairs, Nasir Muazu, and made available to journalists.
The government said the retired senior military officer died from complications linked to diabetes and hypertension while still being held in captivity.
Authorities stated that multiple coordinated efforts were made with security agencies to secure his release, but those efforts were unsuccessful.
“The Katsina State Government, with deep sorrow, announces the death of Retired Major General Rabe Abubakar, who passed away while in bandits’ custody despite sustained efforts to secure his release,” the statement said.
The statement added that the cause of death was linked to underlying medical conditions.
“The General died from complications arising from diabetes and hypertension,” the government said.
The government further described the incident as a national tragedy, noting that his abduction and death represented a significant loss to his family, Katsina State, and Nigeria as a whole.
Governor Dikko Umaru Radda described the development as a “dark moment,” adding that it underscored the urgent need for stronger and more coordinated action against insecurity in the state and beyond.
He extended condolences to the family of the deceased and reaffirmed the state government’s commitment to working with federal authorities and security agencies to combat banditry.
“The Katsina State Government remains committed to working with security forces to ensure that those responsible for this heinous act are brought to justice,” the statement said.
The government added that it would not relent in its efforts to eliminate banditry and protect the lives and property of residents across the state.
Abubakar and his wife were abducted on May 30 while travelling within Katsina State, with earlier reports indicating that the abductors had demanded the release of detained fighters and the return of seized livestock in exchange for their freedom.
