ADC picks Amaechi as Atiku’s running mate for 2027

The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has announced former Rivers State Governor, Rotimi Amaechi, as its vice-presidential candidate for the 2027 general elections, pairing him with former Vice President Atiku Abubakar on what the party described as a “unity and rescue ticket.”

The announcement was made in a statement issued in Abuja on Monday by the party’s National Publicity Secretary, Bolaji Abdullahi, who said the decision followed extensive consultations with stakeholders, coalition partners, and representatives across the country.

According to the party, Amaechi’s emergence as running mate was influenced by his strong performance in the presidential primary, where he came second, as well as his experience across both the legislative and executive arms of government.

The statement noted that the proposed Atiku-Amaechi partnership goes beyond a political alliance and represents the coming together of two experienced political figures with national reach and leadership credentials aimed at repositioning the country.

Party leaders highlighted Amaechi’s record of public service, including his tenure as Speaker of the Rivers State House of Assembly, two-term Governor of Rivers State, and Minister of Transportation, describing him as one of the most experienced political leaders in contemporary Nigeria.

The party further stated that Amaechi’s influence in the South-South and across Southern Nigeria would strengthen the party’s national appeal, while portraying him as a reform-minded administrator and coalition builder capable of complementing Atiku’s candidacy.

According to Abdullahi, the Atiku-Amaechi ticket reflects a national outlook that cuts across regions, generations, and political traditions, offering Nigerians what the party considers a credible alternative ahead of the 2027 elections.

The ADC said the ticket would campaign on issues such as economic recovery, job creation, national security, and national unity, while calling on party members, coalition partners, civil society groups, youth organisations, and women leaders to support the project as preparations for the election intensify.

Amaechi served as Speaker of the Rivers State House of Assembly from 1999 to 2007, Governor of Rivers State from 2007 to 2015, and Minister of Transportation from 2015 to 2023.

He also placed second in the ADC presidential primary with 504,117 votes, while Atiku Abubakar, a former Vice President, emerged as the party’s presidential candidate for the 2027 election.
