Kano approves N1.5bn mass wedding programme for 3,000 couples

The Kano State Government has approved the sum of N1.5 billion for an upcoming mass wedding initiative aimed at supporting 3,000 couples across the state.

The Commander-General of the Kano State Hisbah Board, Sheikh Ibrahim Daurawa, announced the approval while briefing journalists on preparations for the programme.

He said, “The Kano State Government is to spend N1.5bn on the entire mass wedding programme which will soon be conducted in the state.”

Daurawa explained that the funds would cover furniture, food items, dowries, clothing materials for couples, and a N100,000 business grant for each bride.

He added that the Hisbah Board, in partnership with the State Ministry of Health, has begun compulsory medical screening for all prospective participants.

The screenings include tests for hepatitis, HIV, pregnancy, genotype, and other sexually transmitted infections to determine eligibility.

He disclosed that about 5,000 applicants applied for the programme, but only 3,000 couples will be selected after the screening process is completed.

Daurawa commended Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf for the initiative and said the date for the mass wedding would be announced soon.

He noted that the medical screening exercise began on May 8, 2026, across 24 local government areas in the state.

The Hisbah chief added that the exercise is part of efforts to ensure a smooth and well-organised mass wedding programme.
