Makinde Receives DIG, Seeks Stronger Security Collaboration As Abducted Oyo Pupils, Teachers Mark One Month In Captivity

Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde, has called for enhanced collaboration between the state government and the Nigeria Police Force to secure the release of pupils and teachers abducted in Oriire Local Government Area.
The governor made the appeal while receiving the Deputy Inspector-General of Police in charge of the South-West, Olatoye Fayoade, during a working visit to his office in Ibadan.
He said the visit formed part of a nationwide directive by the Inspector-General of Police for senior officers to engage stakeholders and assess security challenges.
The governor noted that the abductions occurred during coordinated attacks on three schools in Oriire Local Government Area on May 15, 2026.
Makinde described the incident as one of the most traumatic security challenges the state has faced in recent times and reaffirmed government’s commitment to working with security agencies until the victims are rescued.
He said, “The painful reality that the abducted children and their teachers have remained in captivity for a month underpins the need for sustained cooperation among security institutions and governments at all levels.”
The governor added, “Today marks exactly one month since the children and their teachers were abducted, and it has been a traumatic and depressing situation for us as a government and for the people of Oyo.”
Makinde acknowledged the operational difficulties facing security agencies, noting that limited resources and vast terrain pose serious challenges to effective policing.
He said Oyo State’s large landmass creates unique security demands, but the government still appreciates the efforts of security personnel.
The governor reiterated his administration’s readiness to provide additional support where necessary to strengthen security operations.
He said, “Whatever we can do as a government, we are ready to do, and if there are areas where you think we need to do more, we are prepared to act.”
Makinde also urged the Deputy Inspector-General to convey the state’s appreciation to the Inspector-General of Police and provide recommendations for improved support to officers.
He commended the establishment of the Police Violent Crimes Unit, describing it as an initiative already yielding positive results in Oyo State.
The Deputy Inspector-General, Olatoye Fayoade, assured the governor that the Nigeria Police Force remains fully committed to rescuing the abducted pupils and teachers.
He said no officer involved in the operation would relent until the victims are safely reunited with their families.
Fayoade conveyed the Inspector-General’s goodwill message and expressed sympathy to the government and people of Oyo State over the incident.
He said the purpose of his visit was to assess security challenges and relay findings to the Inspector-General for further action.
The DIG added that security measures had been strengthened across the state to prevent further criminal activity.
He assured residents that police operations had been intensified to protect lives, property, and critical infrastructure.
Fayoade further pledged that the force would work to prevent a repeat of school abductions and maintain Oyo State’s reputation as one of the most peaceful states in the country.
