Ambassador confident Tinubu may visit U.S. before tenure ends

Nigeria’s Ambassador to the United States, Ambassador Kayode Are, has expressed confidence that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu could make an official visit to Washington, D.C. before the end of his tenure, pointing to what he described as strong and improving diplomatic relations between both countries.
According to him, although presidential travel arrangements depend on multiple strategic, security, and diplomatic factors, the current state of Nigeria–United States relations makes such a visit highly achievable in the foreseeable future.
He noted that ongoing engagements between both governments at various levels have helped sustain active communication and cooperation, even in the absence of a recent face-to-face meeting between the two leaders.
Ambassador Are made the comments during a televised interview, where he highlighted the depth of diplomatic contacts between Abuja and Washington.
He said: “With the excellent relations between the two [President Donald Trump and President Bola Tinubu], I’m sure we will be able to get that done one way or the other. Of course, you know the itinerary of presidents determines where they go or where they cannot go.”
He further explained that interactions between both administrations have remained consistent across different levels of government, stressing that diplomatic relations are not limited to direct presidential meetings.
He added: “Right now, there is a good level of contacts and engagements from top to bottom, even if you have not seen them together physically. I hope that during my tenure, a presidential visit will be possible. It will be the greatest joy to be able to receive my president here,” he said.
The ambassador’s remarks come amid ongoing efforts by Nigeria to deepen strategic ties with the United States in areas such as trade, security cooperation, and diplomatic engagement.
