FG Approves Major NYSC Reform, Redesigns Scheme

The Federal Government has approved a comprehensive reform of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), which occasions one of the most significant restructuring of the scheme since its creation in 1973.

The approval was made at the Federal Executive Council meeting in Abuja, where government officials agreed on a full overhaul directed at repositioning the NYSC for modern national development needs.

Under the new reforms, the leadership structure of the NYSC will be changed from its current military-led arrangement to a civilian-led operational system, while the military will continue to provide security support for corps members nationwide.

The government said the restructuring is designed to reduce military dominance in the day-to-day administration of the scheme and improve efficiency, professionalism, and youth-focused governance.

Officials also stated that the reforms will transform NYSC into a more skills-driven and productivity-oriented institution, rather than a system focused mainly on mandatory service deployment.

A key component of the reform is the redesign of the NYSC framework to prioritize skills acquisition, entrepreneurship training, and digital capacity development for corps members across Nigeria.

The Federal Government further directed that the NYSC Act and related laws be amended to legally back the newly approved changes and ensure smooth implementation across all structures of the scheme.

The reform package also includes improvements to orientation programmes, with a stronger emphasis on leadership training, innovation, and career development for graduates posted for national service.

Government sources explained that the changes are part of a wider strategy to align youth development policies with Nigeria’s economic transformation agenda.

The announcement has been described as the first holistic review of the NYSC in over five decades, with officials stating that the system must evolve to remain relevant to present-day realities.

The Ministry of Youth Development also noted that the reforms will ensure better deployment strategies, improved welfare systems, and more structured post-service opportunities for corps members.

While implementation timelines are expected to follow legislative amendments, the government insists the reforms will be rolled out in phases to avoid disruption of the existing NYSC structure.
